The
City of Oxnard is located in western Ventura County
midway between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles on
the southern coast of California . It is
one of several communities in the fertile Oxnard
plain, a scenic region with a booming economy.
The county's 1,864 square miles include hundreds
of miles of national and state parks and forests,
including the Los Padres National Forest which
makes up most of the northern half of the county.
Oxnard was incorporated in 1903 by the
Ventura County Board of Supervisors, who officially
named the city after the Oxnard brothers who established
the American Beet Sugar Company between 1887-1889.
The city grew steadily into what is now a population
of nearly 185,000. By 2020, Ventura is
projected to be home to almost 956,400 residents.
Although agriculture remains a major industry,
contemporary Oxnard enjoys an expanding economy
based on a healthy combination of agriculture,
commercial and manufacturing development, tourism,
and the U.S. Navy. Ventura County 's unemployment
rate declined to 4.3 percent in 2006, while the
labor force increased to 425,400, a gain of 4,500
over 2005 figures. Ventura County has recorded
consistently lower unemployment rates than California
over the profiled years.
