Encouraging News: California's unemployment rate fell to 5.3 percent in May as recently reported by the state Employment Development Department (EDD). This represents the lowest number of unemployed in the state since July 2001.

More than 176,000 Californians filed claims for Paid Family Leave benefits during its first full year of operation (July 1, 2004 – June 30, 2005). The new program provides up to six weeks of benefits during a one-year period for employees who take time off to provide care for a seriously ill child, parent, spouse, registered domestic partner, or to bond with a new child. With the Port of Los Angeles getting backlogged with shipping imports, companies are seeking alternative ports to get their goods to market in a timely manner. The Oxnard Harbor District is the grantee for Foreign Trade Zone #205 for duty-free importation that includes all of the Port of Hueneme and acreage within the Naval Base Ventura County.
